Alice in Wonderland has always fascinated me. Maybe this story is the key. I'm altering reality, or what our culture, believes is reality-the photograph. So my world is really quite Topsy Turvy. It never starts out that way. It just ends up that way.

I begin with a conventional photograph enlarged, sometimes toned for effect and mounted. The more mundane the subject matter, the better I like it. The objects that attract my attention inform us of our place in this world, speak of the immutability of time and the fear that we will all eventually become our parents.

I take that inevitability and turn it upside down with sheer force of will, paint, pencil, hand-made papers and whimsy. The final touch is the addition of the “fortune cookie fortune”. Now, perhaps, the viewer sees that the world really isn't as inevitable as it was. It can change just by a shift in perception. Changing color, changing texture, the world becomes magical. It takes on new dimensions, new feeling.

I want to take the viewer on a journey to a place only I see. And when I do, I take myself as well. So the trip down the rabbit hole is a journey for me also, always exciting, always fun.
